Episode details

Hello! This is your captain speaking. We made it to Europe after three long years of being away, and I’m so thankful to be on tour again with my Wilco family. I’ll try and check in with you as much as possible but in the meantime, here is a quick demo of a song I whipped up on Wednesday before I left for the airport. I think of this sort of recording as an appropriation of punk rock fliers from the early 80’s. Crude, fast, and sad. This one turned out a little neater than most. I hope you love it… or at least don’t hate it. It’s behind the paywall for the subscribers.

Funny side note: the guitar I played on this demo is now missing in action somewhere on the European continent. If you see a green hard plastic guitar case with some stickers on it, please tweet at me.

As is often the case when I travel, I’ve taken to retracing my steps. This time in Oslo, Norway; a city I’ve been coming to for nearly 30 years, all the way back to some of the first shows Uncle Tupelo ever played in Europe. Among the things I’ve gone to see is this little guard tower Uncle Tupelo used as a dressing room when we played a venue called Cruise Café in the mid-90’s, the same venue famous in the Wilco camp for being the place where we were heckled into playing “Box Full of Letters” again, after we had already played it, albeit in a waltz country style. Because, as our thick-tongued heckler explained, his “box is only half full of letters”. Not to be denied.

Carry on!
