Hello, this is your Captain speaking — Believe it or not, it’s been a year since I found myself at the helm of this here Starship. The Starship Casual. I say “I found myself” at “the helm” instead of some other, more decisive language like “I commandeered the controls” or “grabbed the wheel” for a reason. Along that point about liking the interaction, how about the occasional zoom call with a small / random group of subscribers? Many of us would love the chance to just chat with you without having to stalk a bus or whatever.
Is there a 'side cabin' where fellow bookworms can hear your thoughts/musings on the latest books you've been reading (as a recently boarded passenger, apologies if this is already a feature of postings over the last year)?
I think we can all say we didn’t know we needed Starship Casual until it existed. Thanks for creating it!
I love to hear your little messages from the woods and the beach as you go for walks. Hearing the sounds of nature as you talk is pretty cool, especially through headphones. It feels like I’m in the environment--I was going to say having a conversation, but you never let me get a word in.
I've been a fan since Uncle Tupelo, following your career and music closely as I love Wilco and your solo work. But never did I think I would come to know you and your family so well and have the privilege of opening my email daily to find a link to a new song demo, a day in Wilco history or just a chat with you as you walk the lake beach this past year. You got me through covid and then cancer in 2022. I can't thank you enough for giving so much of yourself to me over the last 3 years. I will be a subscriber as long as you have a subscription!
I get writer’s block every time I think about what to say even in a comment, so I’m awed by your ability-and desire!-to communicate directly with us in such an open and natural way. The chitchat check-ins may be my favorite part because your voice is so soothing and cozy.
And I love the community you’re nurturing, and knowing that it’s meaningful to you makes it even more special. And omg, you make me laugh out loud so often, like in this post. “Just keep your requests to play in your town to yourself, I’ll get there when I get there.” Yesssss!
I can’t think of any suggestions, really. It’s been pretty damn perfect so far. I do always love when Susie deigns to weigh in, so more of that is always welcome!

Regarding suggestions I’d love some input from Susie, Spencer and Sammi and even Pedrobot & Basil too if that was something you and they were comfortable with.
Like most people I suspect I started out with the Tweedy show because I’m a Wilco fan but quickly fell in love with your family and their contributions (Especially Suzy - she’s hilarious). I think many of us miss them and if Starship casual was in some ways intended to continue what the Tweedy show started can I respectfully request some more of them? -No offence 😘
I’ve enjoyed the ride. I love the nature walks and your insights while you’re walking. Your voice is very soothing. Sing more often and joke around and just be you because you’re amazing.

What I love is for this year long period I have been feeling like to be actually onboard Starship with you and mate clients although it is an Imaginary journey.
Due to a time diffence between the US and Japan (now i'm staying in Bangalore India for a couple of months), in most cases I found your posts like songs and check-ins in morning. Jeff, you gave me hopes, inspirations, motivations and wakings to my life with this Starship.
I thank you, your family and team for all those wonderful experiences. I'm ready for the next voyage, Captain.
Long time listener, first time caller. Just checking in to say I enjoy the Starship. Sometimes a chit chat check in made an eavesdropper at work think I was listening to a voicemail from an uncle. Keep up the good work Uncle Captain.
Starship Casual has been so delightful and entertaining and it’s just been great to get to ride the starship with everyone else in between Wilco/Tweedy shows, festivals, album releases, etc. I get so much out of seeing everyone else’s comments and suggestions. What a fun, funny, smart bunch!
As your favorite founding member, I feel a lot of pressure to give you some great suggestions. Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you. Until then, carry on my Captain!
Yes, you gave my cats their real, permanent middle names: Mew Carnie Spellman and Maisie Kettlechip Spellman. Apparently they were once part of a traveling circus and were ousted for grift and eating too many truck-based treats?
Congratulations on a year of Starship Casual. If you have a tux sitting around you could put it on, get in the tub and do Starship Formal once. Other than that, I think it’s very nice when there’s interactivity on deck in response to comments or taking questions or song requests. I’m also a big fan of behind the scenes or works in progress looks, and non-showbiz regular life stuff too. I think pet naming should continue, and possibly expend to cars, vacation homes, blankies, and senators. Thank you!
