One trip around the sun

Hello, this is your Captain speaking —

Believe it or not, it’s been a year since I found myself at the helm of this here Starship. The Starship Casual. I say “I found myself” at “the helm” instead of some other, more decisive language like “I commandeered the controls” or “grabbed the wheel” for a reason. It really didn’t feel like much of a plan on my part. More like the universe had conspired to create a community I’d never dreamed of. And in turn (much like The Tweedy Show before it), it exposed a need to share and connect that I never realized was so central to who I am. Turns out I’m nowhere near the misanthrope I thought I was. And, in fact, I adore direct, genuine interaction with anyone interested in that kind of thing. Which, as it happens, a bunch of you are. Hi! Thanks for being here.

One year in, I’ve shared almost 50 songs and created more than 150 posts. Combined we’ve made thousands of comments. I gotta say, I’m enjoying it. A lot actually. So if it’s okay with the powers that be (that’s you), I’m going to continue this flight into year two, and I hope at least some of you would like to continue along with me. You can expect some of the same: more music, more check-ins, more photos of creatures, more advice, more stories. Beyond that, I’m open to including some new developments. What kind of content would you like from your captain? The suggestion box (read: comment section below) is open. What do you like? What do you want more (or less) of?

I see this as a collaborative effort and I appreciate the input. Just keep your requests to play in your town to yourself, I’ll get there when I get there.

Two more things: First, a bunch of content will remain free, so tell your friends to join the party and subscribe.

And second, in a world where you can watch, listen to, or read almost anything without a charge, I know it can be jarring to see certain songs and posts behind a paywall. But the truth is, that $6 monthly fee keeps the ship running. A stellar crew works alongside me, editing, engineering, researching and programming these posts. So I appreciate those of you who add the fee to your monthly budget, and I hope you feel fairly compensated in exchange.
