Chit-Chat Check-In #85 Transcript

Good morning, this is your Captain speaking, speaking to you from my horizontal rejuvenation chamber. Yes, we're still doing the spaceship schtick.

I was just thinking that I haven't posted anything yet this week. And since Wilco has been preparing for our festival, thinking about the different songs we could play for our Deep Cuts set on Friday night, I've been going through the Wilco catalog and relearning songs that we haven't played a whole lot. And sometimes, you come across a song and kind of wonder why you don't play it more often.

I think I know why with this song. I think it's a really beautiful recording, and the arrangement we came up with is really lush and sweet. But I think my phrasing on the lyrics is really clunky, especially the verse where I say, "I could base my whole existence upon the cherry strands in your gold hair." Which is a lot to say. Maybe if I did it today I would write a simpler line. But definitely, singing it today, and I have a better handle on how to fit all that in than I hear when I listen to the record. It's not pretty, in my opinion, compared to its surroundings.

So, yeah, go back occasionally and you reevaluate. And in some ways, it's nice to know you can do better. In other ways, it feels a little bit like, you know, you let one get away.

But anyway, I like going back and being reminded of songs that, I don't know, somehow slipped through the cracks. Some of them are quite challenging to relearn, if you can imagine. I don't know why—it's like a different person wrote them. Which is, I think, cosmically correct.

Anyway, if you're going to Solid Sound, or even if you're not, are there Deep Cuts, less well-known Wilco songs ... already, most Wilco songs aren't extremely well known, so there's that. Let me know if there's something else we should consider, or what you'd like to hear if you were there.

All right—I'm going to get up now. Carry on.
