L'shana tova! I appreciate that you acknowledge that JBJ is a good guy even if his music isn't your cup of tea (I don't mind most of it...although I have never seen him live and don't own any of his records). The JBJ foundation focuses on hunger and housing. He uses his celebrity for very good causes, and I think that is admirable:)
Bon Jovi is just fine in certain circumstances. Like a wedding reception, for instance. It's fun when the band or DJ plays Livin' on a Prayer. Everybody sings along. Do I seek that song out on Spotify when I'm driving? I do not. But maybe now I will, especially when I've completed 50% of my journey.
Speaking of Journey. They're fine, too. :D
I'm glad we have this safe space to talk about these things.
I admitted, just this morning, to my wife that I had bought REO Speedwagon's Hi Infedelity when I was 10 years old, one of my very first LP's. My 8 year old is discovering Nirvana and AC/DC. Naturally I told him to bring up Renegade by Styx, he said, "This Rock 'n Roll is pretty good."
In a totally random tangent ... I’m working on an essay about cover songs ... well I think it’s really gonna be copyrights & cover songs - and I Re listened to the episode of Object of Sound where Hanif Abdurraqib and Jeff talk about cover songs. And I started putting together a playlist of what I consider to be powerful cover songs (based on criteria completely created by me...) and I came across a Fiona Apple cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit which I can’t stop hearing in my head. And thinking about. And being both creeped out by and in awe of.
I truly love Nirvana - but I don’t always have the headspace for them...especially if I’m working - they don’t make the best background music, so I was stoked to find this, but I also can’t work when it’s on!
Also some of my favorite parent days were when my kid, who is 21 now, would reference an artist or song I loved - or even better when I’d just hear it coming out of her speaker or hear her singing along (headphones on) to music I love!
The ‘burb I live in used to have this event on the town square called “Rally in the Alley” and there’d be live music and the mass consumption of cheap beer. The bands were almost always classic rock cover bands, some tribute bands as well. My wife and I would sit in the backyard under our canopy and we could hear it quite well. We’d have a couple drinks and listen to a Doors cover band one week, a British Invasion band the next, and so on. One night was a Bon Jovi tribute band and another cover band devoted to hair metal. And as the entirety of my teen years was spent in the 80s, I was (unfortunately) all too familiar with hair metal. I hated that shit. I was a thrash metal, punk, hardcore, post-punk, and old school English metal kinda 80s teen. But I’ll be damned if I didn’t know every word to those damned Bon Jovi songs. Every. Single. Word. Damn him.
Jeff, we love you and you also could never disappoint! I love the honesty and openness of the Starship, and the fact that you can just keep things here. We star travelers are here by your side O Captain as we hurtle thru the cosmos together.
I’m so excited you guys are coming to Oz ( particularly Brisbane!! OMFG yes!!) that I don’t care what any stoopid clickbait headlines say you say......and how good is this safe space within the Starship for us to be able to say what we say and think! No judgement upon this fair ship 😎
A few years back I took a schoolbus up to the top of Mt. Tam to see Wilco and some other fine bands at the annual Sound Summit. After an amazing show, hundreds of us waited in line for schoolbuses to take us back down. It turns out that even hardened Wilco fans will belt out "Livin' on a Prayer" if the time is right.
Love the new Cousins track! Will be in the audience on September 28 in Dallas, the day before the album drops. Like other signature sounds, such as The Wall of Sound (minus the murderer, of course) or TSOP, this one embodies the muscular ennui that is The Wilco Sound.
Jeff I called Bob, as I’ve got him on speed dial, and smoothed things over. He said he was a little surprised at first seeing as how you cover a song of his every once and awhile but says he understands the potential for miscommunication out there in socialmedialand! He harkened to a way back time, pre-X, that he brought an electric guitar onstage and things got a little crazy….
I knew you loved Bob Dylan. I do too. Blood on the Tracks forever!! Your post made me so happy I started crying. The internet is so weird. Hope Peter is doing well.
BTW -- L’shana tova everyone!

Thanks for reminding me that I need to remember to start writing 5784 on my checks.
L’shana tovah tikatevu Captain!
Happy new year!

Jeff, please feel free to make fun of anybody. Including me.

Can’t wait to read this chapter of the book!!
I saw that headline about Dylan and immediately thought, "Well that's LITCHERALLY the dumbest."
"..we got each other, and that's enough for love...let's give it a shot..."
Dude, that could be a Wilco lyric in a parallel universe of cosmic understanding ?
Lol -- uh -- true! Such different context.

Any chance of some Hank Williams this Sunday? 100th birthday! Keep up the great work!
The rumors of your persecution of Bon Jovi have been greatly exaggerated?
Happy new year!
You don't have to apologize for being intelligent!
Ignore the noisy thoughtless crowd.
You've got us 🥰

Scandalous! Can't wait for the book now ;-)

Ah Mary. What a show that was! Right?! W Bobbie and the ‘co singing Tomorrow Never Knows?!!💜😉💜

Yay Dallas show! Can’t wait! And about that advance copy of Cousin...

We kinda know each other. I'll take that as a win.
