Susie, what time did bands go on stage when you were involved with Lounge Ax? Please open a club where bands play until 2am….like bands used to…Christ! I’m old! I know Jeff is in his 50s…he can start at 2pm and play until 5 and still hit the early bird special. He’s one of the only people, other than John Cale, and Bob Mould, that I’ve seen who can play 2-3 hours of their own music…Cale has to be close to 80 and Mould…60s? Jeff you are young! Plus you are healthy! Play! Don’t Worry! Shit Ronson and Ian Hunter were playing clubs in their early 40s at places you played with Uncle Tupelo! The Living Room Providence, RI!
Aww, so sweet that you got to reunite with Tim after all these years. Thanks for sharing the SD demo. What happened to all that harmonica, uh, shredding? Did I also detect a dash of Jay backing vox, too?
Screen Door has always been one of my faves back in the early 90s, I had a TDK Crome cassette with no depression on side A and still feel gone on side B in my first car, a Ford I got from grandpa when he passed away. Thanks for sharing this early version 🙂👍
A wonderful show at the Sheldon (except for the guy next to me who demonstrated his appreciation by whistling loudly - ~140 db - into my ear after each song w/ two fingers. How does he always find me?)
I'm sorry about the hips, but they're cosmologically easier to recover from than artificial knees - my dad had all four replaced! Note: stay away from the wicker!
Q: You played your vintage parlour guitar (000--015, according to your guitar tech) 90% of the show. Why did you do so? Is it THAT much better than your dreadnoughts, or is it merely more comfortable?
As a late-in-life guitarist, I have so many questions, none of which you have any obligation to answer - nor, do I imagine you have any interest ;
Nonetheless, as an owner of a basic Yamaha, I keep skewing my aspirational focus upwards. A week ago, I desired a $500 XE laminated Martin, before I honed in on a Guild Mahogany D-120, before shifting to a used D-15, finally ending on a 000-015, after your show, which I certainly cannot afford!
I recognize this isn't a "Dear Abby" column, but do you have any practical advice for me? If I could have just met you at a Starbucks for 10 mins, I could have obtained everything I need to know!
Thanks!
p.s. Clearly, strings don't make the guitarist ; Nonetheless, what type and gauge are your preferred ones? I'm tired of playing a guitar that sounds like it's muffled by a wet blanket!
My main guitar is a ‘30’s Martin O-18. I love it for reasons that are difficult to explain. We just have a great relationship. We “get” each other. I use dead strings and only change them when they begin to affect intonation. A Guild M-20 would be a comparable guitar worth checking out if you like the way mine sounded. Hope this helps.
Thanks so much, JEFF! So thoughtful of you to respond! I'm watching an M-20 review on Youtube now. I love how modern tech makes the world smaller... except when it doesn't ; Coffee Creek 4-Ever! R.I.P. Cicero's ;
Love the "Screen Door" demo, so perfectly timed with this heat wave (I'm in Texas) and my recent digging back into Steve Earle's work, which "pairs nicely" with 1990s Tupelo (what doesn't?). Catching up with friends after decades--and picking up right where you left off--is one of life's great joys!
I’m at my happy place right now. Port Townsend’s Writers’ Conference at Fort Worden in Washington State. Sharing/reading/writing poetry and prose during the day. And lots, and lots, and lots of music at night. This song is absolutely perfect for capturing the mood! Thanks!
Love the raw nature of the demo. The enthusiasm and song quality shines through. What a neat sound nugget to discover! Thanks for sharing. Hope you're not getting rained out. Just saw something about flash floods in Colorado... Denver, maybe? Take care. Buy a raft.
Jeff, I arrived on the Wilco train only about 6 years ago. I'm late the party, but thankful for the creative shot in the arm you've been to this current age of music. I love the substack and wanted to thank you for being an inspiration to me personally. PS - Love the Grimeys shirt! My home record store since I moved to Nashville 2 years back 🤘
That is just the warmest, sweetest version, Jeff. Cosmically timeless. And yes to an updated version from your grayer, but no less young at heart self, please! Also must note the week in Wilco. Not to be a suck up, but Wilco is my favorite band and My Morning Jacket is my missus’ favorite band. And Revolver, on any given day, is my fave 🪲 album. So that would’ve been something to experience in 2013. Love, from Dallas!
Thanks for sharing Cap’n. Looking forward to catching your shows in Boulder tomorrow and Avon on Saturday. That song and record were the soundtrack of my freshman year at college…makes me feel like I’m seeing an old friend too!! (I’ll be the guy quietly requesting Screen Door 😎). ✌️
Please shake out all of your clothes and your suitcase before you come home. Twice. At least.
I can't believe you just also texted that thing to our family text. I need therapy now.
I’m sorry I didn’t think you read my Substack. Hi honey! OxO
😂 I did pre posting nightmare inducing bugs. Shudder. xo
Omg. Susie you are a queen. I wanna be like you when I grow up!! Hilarious as ever.

I remember Jeff writing about “Shaking” salads for lunch, but this is a new twist!

Definitely Jay back there with some harmonies.
Yep!!
Excellent ploy to get me to reup my subscription! Sounds surprisingly full-fledged.
Hope your hip is okay. Don't go climbing Red Rocks till it's fixed.
Here's the Tweedy Show rendition from the 31st anniversary of its release, which made lots of viewers happy:

Also, thanks to your historical tip about Conan, I found that clip:

Isnt that Jimmy Vivino on Guitar, not Jim O'Rourke? !

Youthful energy in every strum!
Jeff, Hi. I apologize if this is duplicative!

Still always one of my favorites! Requested it in NOLA recently...denied lol. muah!
Hey Jeff, we live in south Boulder. You’re welcome to stop by this afternoon. We’ve got guitars, basses, and a piano...

Cognitive dissonance: song cool, bugs GAH
Super fun to hear this nugget from the past. Thanks for sharing.
