Chit-Chat Check-In #153 Transcript
Hello, this is your Captain speaking on the last day of the Twilight Override tour in Bozeman, Montana.
First of all, I want to say thank you to anyone, everyone, who came out to see any of the shows that we’ve done playing the Twilight Override material since September. I think that’s when we kind of started. If you’ve been following along here on the Substack, you’re probably aware, or if you came out to any of the shows, you’re obviously aware of the fact that we play at least one song every night that we never play for any other audience.
And most of the time we play two. We started that practice because in a lot of places there’s one really crowd-pleasing, obvious, iconic song that you can think of. And a lot of times there’s also a rather obscure song by somebody that, I don’t know—we just try on a song by somebody that we all admire that might not be as well known. Case in point, in Houston we played a Beyoncé song and a Jandek song. I think that’s probably the widest gap between notoriety and obscurity, even though Jandek’s not that obscure. Well, he probably is to a lot of people that are fans of Beyoncé, I would assume, but that’s not really a fair assumption, either.
You know what? I’m just going to say that that’s an example of one that the crowd might know, obviously know, and one that the crowd very palpably did not know. But still stood by us and listened, and, I think, appreciated it. And certainly the people that did know what it was were surprised, which is always fun.
So, I thought it’d be fun to share, first of all, a list of all the songs that we’ve played so far. We really honestly haven’t picked two songs out for tonight in Bozeman. I’m suspecting that we might do a Hannah Montana song, and then there’s a Julee Cruise song that we’ve been thinking about because of David Lynch being from Montana, which, you know—sometimes they’re a little bit tangential to the goal of finding somebody from the city or the state.
I also thought it’d be interesting, potentially, for you all to hear what it sounds like in the dressing room when we’re learning these songs. And last night we played “Lotta Love” by Neil Young, because Nicolette Larson had a hit with it and she’s from Helena, which was close to Great Falls, which is where we were.
We also played a Charley Pride song because he played baseball. Before his country music career, he played baseball on a couple of different teams in Montana, one in Helena, one in Missoula, and I think he was in Great Falls. I can’t remember what the name of that team was, but it says he lived there for a while on the internet.
Anyway, this is what it sounds like while we’re learning an arrangement and everybody’s gravitating towards their places in the harmony. And that’s what this is.
Again, thank you all for coming out. I am filled with gratitude to have had this experience and to get to play this amount of music with my children and friends who I’ve known since they were little kids too. It’s been an incredible thrill and a great thing for my family and me to get to spend that amount of time together. And Susie was with us on a fair amount of the touring as well, which, you know, made it even sweeter. So, carry on.
