When You’re Around (Water From Your Eyes cover)
+ That time I pitched in the World Series…
Chit-Chat Check-In #91 • Audio transcript
Hello from the rehabilitation wing of the Starship Casual, post hip surgery #2, which went well. I’m starting to walk around without a crutch, even. It’s very painful, but I can do it. Thank you for all your well wishes on Susie’s Instagram and elsewhere.
I wanted to say hi and recap Solid Sound a little bit. There were so many amazing, badass bands around. Water From Your Eyes asked me to help sing their song “When You’re Around” because their lead singer, Rachel, was under the weather, vocally. I was flattered and had a great time learning the song. I thought I’d share the acoustic version I recorded. Sometimes it’s easier to get a song stuck in your head if you play it.
Horse Lords were great. Iris DeMent was great. Joanna Sternberg was great. Ratboys were great, or so I heard—I didn’t get a chance to see everybody, because the Wilcos are so busy during just about every moment of the festival. It was a really, really satisfying musical experience.
Enjoy the track below the paywall, and carry on.

P.S. Stephen… Mark… If you hear this, I’m sorry for dream-lying to you about playing in the World Series. I just wanted to impress you. I have thrown mostly strikes every time I’ve thrown out a first pitch, though. So, you know. La Russa could’ve called me.
This Week in Wilco, Etc.
2013 / July 9: Wilco plays Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth, MN on the Americanarama Festival Tour. Richard Thompson sits in on covers of Fairport Convention’s “Sloth” and Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald.”

2000 / July 10: Wilco opens for Natalie Merchant at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA, playing a 10-song set.
Solid Sound was magical. I fell in love with the place, the people, new to me bands… I felt like something shook loose inside and I got a sweet soul reset. Jeff! I’ve been writing lyrics, every day since! I was so inspired! I’m happy to hear that Susie is on the upswing and I’m glad you are now on the other side of that 2nd hip surgery. Love and deeeep healing to you both. ❤️
Best solid sound yet!!!! Glad to hear you are on the mend. ‘Pain goes in one direction.’ Sounds like some good potential lyrics. ❤️❤️❤️
