I learned this short and sweet beauty a little while ago when it was released as a preview track for Alvvays new LP Blue Rev. I love the unexpected C demolished chord in the chorus. If I understand these lyrics correctly I think that chord (Cdim actually) makes the phrase “I hear it happens all the time” even more withering and full of delicious pitying scorn. A diminished chord employed to diminish. Love it!
tl:dr ... but I was litchurally just listening to that song, trying to figure out why it wasn’t showing up in my Apple Music with the rest of their album and bam! your cover showed up in my inbox. So I was perfectly equipped to annoy/help you! (ywbtw)
I love that she has a “fondness for the pathetic perspective.” Listening to that record now. Thank you. I “always” appreciate the music you share that is new to me.
Like many bands, I'd heard OF them, but never actually hard them. Then Jeff featured them a while back and of course I had to check them out. Wow.
I first heard Califone when they opened for Wilco in 2010. It wasn't until about 7 years later that I really started to like them. Makes me wish I could go back and relive that show.
Red Red Meat (Tim Rutili and company)…precursor to Califone used to play at Susie’s club Lounge Ax. I highly recommend Jimmy majestic whine….I think that’s the name. Jealous Butcher Records. Great band!
Thanks for the tip. I checked out Jimmywine Majestic and liked it. Still prefer the mellower tone of Califone, but definitely a nice addition to the Rutili playlist.
Really nice break in front of our first indoor fire this season in northern MI. Really pretty song and Jeff your voice sounds so youthful and rich. Happy Fall, Y’all! Be safe. Be Kind. Good health to All.
It’s fun to read between the lines here. The sister is unconcerned about her sibling’s privacy, offering that the sib has someone new and “that ... glow.” But what role does a sister play in popular music since forever? She’s the one the narrator takes up with (or threatens to) if he/she isn’t satisfied. (“Happens all the time” in tunes.) Maybe the narrator’s apparent casual acceptance is real and it’s cuz the chatty sister’s taken her sib’s place -- so maybe “new love glow” was offered with an eye roll and a wink. Rank speculation here, but when a song operates narratively like a (very) short story, you get to/got to read between the lines.
Jeff, if you took that photo of the squirrel with your iPhone….you have a steady hand! A very steady hand! That’s exactly how he looks through my Daisy scope!
I love that C as much as a C argumentative.
Two very important arrows in the chord quiver.
Isn’t the title Pharmacist? Love the Alvvays cover, though. Seeing them tonight!
PAAAAAAULLLL!!! *shakes fist at sky (tybtw)

OMG, you caused Jeff to revise his post! 😉

Really lovely cover and thank you for explaining what a diminished chord is. I think I need to check out Alvvays.
Yes, another unknown (to me) band to check out, thanks to the Captain. Could be my next Big Thief. There's nothing better to a lover of great music .
Love Big Thief! I first discovered them when they were opening for Wilco.

Thanks. I was aware of the precursor, but I'll check out the album suggestion. I think I've only heard Bunny Gets Paid.
Check it out…I think you’ll enjoy.

If you let me know how to contact you (or contact me) I believe I have a digital download of album when I purchased the vinyl LP.
Molly Rankin is one of hell of a songwriter! Love Alvvays

🐿 imported from Connecticut...just in time for fall.
Great cover
Nice one! Thanks, Captain. Squirrel has a belly full of acorns.
More like Kirkland trail mix. These squirrels are very well represented.
