Captain Jeff is taking most of the week off (from Substack anyway), to celebrate his birthday, which is today. Happy birthday, Jeff! This afternoon he went on a hike, this evening he will play a show, and at some point we hope he finds himself in front of a sugar-free treat.
Happy birthday! When I was 12 my high school English teacher dad decided to start a side hustle of dressing up in a gorilla costume and delivering birthday balloons. I was mortified but needed the $$ too and was his "trainer" as my teen job. Sometimes the gorilla stripped from a tuxedo to a g-string for extra oomph! But my dad was so cool so I went along with it. And what's better than seeing a gorilla dressed in a tux, tee or pasties on your birthday?
Happy birthday Jeff! Great write up Crystal and Mark- funny gorilla story :) And Mark, are you keeping your podcast appearance on “The Truth About Recording and Mixing” podcast a secret?! It was a good listen for all the behind the scenes Loft drama ;)
Good hijacking piece. Huffing clown gorilla innards . . . good to know, I think. Happy birthday to the Captain, and a million THANK YOUs for streaming the Philco show tomorrow night!
Happy happy birthday to Jeff! That gorilla looks like the horrifying animatronic animals they used to have at Showbiz Pizza, which still haunt me to this day. They would "wake up", play and sing music, and then shut down and they looked dead. Horrifying! I'm glad at least one of them or a similar one is off the streets. LOL.
Now this is the kind of content we’ve been waiting for (no offense, El Capitan). Thanks, Crystal and Mark! If Gorillaz ever visit The Loft, you’ll have to be sure to post a video of them with the Birthday Gorilla, OK? In the meantime, here’s hoping Jeff had a great #birthyay in New Hampshire with a now-appropriate soundtrack of the Minutemen’s Double Nickels On The Dime…
Jeff, you share the same birthdate as my own favorite Grandpa - who, sadly, passed this year. He was a dandy. But, sad as it is, I listen to and enjoy "Don't Forget" from time to time - one of my favorite songs of yours. It describes the human condition/loss/funerals so well. That song helps buffer/filter the grief. A song, I will have everyone know, Jeff referred to as a "Dead Grandpa Song"... on stage... night two in SF with Sammy/Spencer/Sima/Liam/James(Jim) this past Winter (what an amazing bunch!). Of course it brought tears as you all played it - but I also liked the semi-glib sentiment; so would my grandfather.
happy, happy birthday Jeff! maybe when things ease off we can get a cover of Tom Waits ' Ol' 55 ' segueing into the Rubinoos 'Gorilla' from you to celebrate??
Happy Birthday to one heck of a dude. Not only are you one helluva a song writer, but also cool enough to hang out regularly with a fine looking GorillaClown with a 5 inch range of hydromatic G-Clown arm motion. May the songs never cease to flow, and may the GorillaClown become eternally bloated with endless layers of numbered t-shirts.
All very well and good but when you promise to share how semi robotic it is, some of us expected a video demo.
Happy Birthday, Captain!
I think all Loft social media accounts should be renamed STUFFINMYLOFT

Was the gorilla from a shop next door to Mid-West Buy and Sell?
Thank you, Crystal and Mark, for the laughs!
If the arm moves up and down just 4-5 inches, strap a banjo on him.
He could strum the first chords of Deliverance and look straight out of the movie!
That was hilarious, Mark. And Crystal
Happiest of Birthdays Captain.
