I love the contrasts maybe contradictions going on here: the Gibson has a clean, bright, happy sound; while a near-orchestral, (strings ?cello?violin?) faintly in the background has a melancholy, mournful sound . . . as does Jeff's voice.
And the lyrics are beautiful, subtle, and sad. The trout image: "dying sky and water/ Rainbow/ flickering out" I've heard that a rainbow trout loses its gorgeous colors as it dies? It turns gray, like dying sky and water?
This song sounds like the end of the world to me. But: Moonlike. Dark Cabin. Rounding edges. That's a soft, pretty image. Maybe its a good thing to round your edges. Yet it's a worry. (Am I losing my edge?) I love this song. It is truly a country song upside down.
Love the tone of the guitar. Gonna listen a couple more times and use today to listen to all the new stuff.
Jeff, we are so geeked you are coming to Interlochen Music Academy in August. I watch the same Big Lake as you, hike it in all seasons. Make sure you get out to the gorgeous beaches up here in the “pinky.” Call me if you want to trek Sleeping Bear Dunes, dont miss it! The venue at Interlochen is amazing, wondering if you have any personal connection to the Academy? THANK YOU so much, saw you last July at Red Rocks after our daughter’s wedding in CO, but this show could be even more special in my “backyard” that is the North Woods. Ever been to the venue? The stage is nestled between two lovely northern lakes. Can’t wait to hear you scatter the loons on the raucous part of (At least that’s what you said.” Rip the roof off the place!
Judging by the first 4 tracks released, maybe this should have been a triple album. Lovely stuff. Thanks guys.
And Mark, I think you need to think about writing a book too. At least poetry. Ode to a Guitar Neck.
I didn’t read the gear talk yet but the song...beautiful. Beyond beautiful.
I 🌟cannot wait🌟 for this album.
14 sleeps until solid sound 🚀🌕
:: tHaNk yoU for all of this :;

Tried reading it bottom to top, didn't work.
“I found a song upside-down” might just give “the ashtray says you were up all night” a run for the money as my favorite lyric. Such a great song!
Wow, that's beautiful. Thank you for this.
I think being behind the paywall agrees with me.
When you said there were surprises coming, you weren’t kidding. Thanks for all you do, Mark, and see you in a couple of weeks!
Gordon Lightfoot is right!

Mark writes lyrically. ❤️
I also come from Kalamazoo but I don’t sound nearly as sweet as this guitar.
She's a yummy, honey-colored, big-boned beauty 😉❤️ Love your style, Mark. Great song, Cap'n!
Sounds like every best country song I’ve heard, without sounding like any of them.
Beautiful! Cannot wait for the whole kit-n-kaboodle.
Excellent song and sweet commentary! I hope at least once Jeff has performed "Sundown" or "If You Could Read My Mind" while playing this beauty.
