I'm not a hip doctor, nor do I play one on TV but as someone who has a few more years on me and has had a nagging hip make itself known a few times here are a few tips from my own journey: 1. yin yoga - this is an amazing practice as we age. Paul Grilley wrote the book and (like everything) you can find a lot of information, classes, sequences online. Yin works your connective tissue and doesn't engage your muscles and has you in seemingly simple shapes that are held for a long time. It works from the center out and hips and the back are the most immediately areas that benefit from this practice. Just doing one of the simple hip postures once or twice a day should have a big impact. This easy practice totally helps keep and restore the fluid and connective tissue that allows us to move. 2. Keep walking it may seem counter-intuitive but the movement is amazingly helpful 3. Talk to your MD but know that my own hip situation was mis-diagnosed at first and what I was told would be a chronic situation has been dealt with an no longer plagues me.
Again, thanks for the posts and all you, Wilco and your family do for this community. Sorry I won't be at the shows with that long-time friend of mine Phil that you and Nels are doing - I'm sure it will be joyful.
I love Paul Grilley! I took a workshop with him 2004 and I still think about it often. I don't practice Yin -- or any yoga -- enough anymore. May this be the sign I've been waiting for to get back into yoga. :)
Jeff, honey, make an orthopedic appt to have your hips x-rayed and reviewed.
You may have arthritis and experiencing bone-on-bone pain cause the joint is worn out. I'm recovering from my 2nd hip replacement -- 2 weeks out from surgery. The best part is not having the pain that I lived with for so long.
If you want any insights, ok to message, Twitter or IG.
I am a doctor and a hip specialist, but hard to examine you from my practice in California. In Chicago I recommend you see Monica Roh, MD at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. She is a top doctor in the field and a nice person to boot.
So sorry to hear about your hips! You know, I made a comment to my wife about the way you stood when I caught the first day of the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 20th Anniversary shows back in April in NYC. It looked at times, especially toward the end of the show, that you were favoring one leg over the other and I wondered if your hips were starting to bother you. My friend is a physical therapist, so I'll ask what he knows about 54 year old, moderately overweight men and hip issues. But I would not be a STUBBORN MALE about it - go ask your GP to see a hip specialist and have them take a look. Better to catch issues sooner rather than later...Love you Jeff. Want to keep attending Wilco (and Philco) shows until we're both old and gray... I got to see Bob Dylan last year and he was still dancing around the stage at 80 years old...this is the expectation you and the rest of Wilco have to live up to, my friend... (just kidding, but seriously, get some help, man...)
And apologies for being gender normative. I should have said STUBBORN PERSON, but my wife is always labelling me a "stubborn male" when I behave similarly when something is bothering me, so I wrote a bit hastily there...
(...and I assume you identify as he/him...although is this official anywhere actually? Open minded to whatever you want to be, Mr. Tweedy...)
Jeff, take care of yourself. Get the hip pain looked at, please. I'm no doctor- just a humble fire captain/paramedic/artist who often observes guys our age allow for aches and pains to go unchecked far too long. And btw, we love the new album! "Oh yes, you were blessed, blessed in the past tense..." I'm sorry, but I find that really funny in a dark kinda way. Love from Dallas.
You are so thoughtful to even think back to what you said to the man about his son's birthday. The important thing is acknowledgment and the effort to do better next time. I am 53 and have had hip issues off and on through my life. Consistent stretching works best for me!!
I know this isn’t exactly what you want to hear but my brother got 2 hip replacements in his 50s. He was in a lot of pain. He just turned 60 and now he’s a crazy man-building houses by himself; hiking and fishing in Alaska now. Go to the doctor!!
Not a doctor, but I was having a heck of a time with my hips last year, especially after going for walks, and I got a new mattress (advertised as being good for side sleepers with hip pain) and voila, no more hip pain. Hope you are on the mend soon!
Custom orthopedic insoles (not the crap in Instagram ads) created a significant improvement with my similar hip issues. Worth looking into. We'll see you at Outlandia and Grand Rapids; hoping you are feeling better by then. Love, Shannon and Joseph - Minneapolis
Hey Philco man! In addition to what Annie U said, a friend of mine that is an amazing Medical Masseuse and works on healthcare professionals of all types, recommended a simple stretch to me a few years back as I am a tad older than you and these aches & pains just hit us after a certain age and wear & tear we put ourselves thru. Anyway I stand with my left side first next to a set of stairs and put my left foot up one or two steps and while holding a rail or the wall with my left arm, I reach slowly down with my right hand all the way to touching the floor and do a static hold on this stretch for a minute or two, then slowly raise myself up again. Repeat on the other side and you will notice an almost immediate improvement. Also, if you ever want an anti-inflammatory shake mix that really helps with tons of curcumin in it, let me know as I work for a nutritional supplements that sells directly to chiropractors and other med peeps! Carry on Captain!

Yin is amazing. Helped my back tremendously.
I teach yin yoga but still needed a hip replacement. Just a side note. Wrote a couple of blogs about my yoga practitioner// teacher// hip experience. I will be back teaching yin in August. Hip replacement was April 28th. https://www.sassipantsyoga.com/blog/a-path-back-to-the-practice-yoga-hipster-to-hip-replacement-to-hip-hip-hooray

Fellow hippie, Suze. I had surgery April 28th. Life is so much better!

Wilco (from "Wild" and "Disco")
Hoping at least 197 of these suggestions work for you, Jeff! My only advice is to be as kind to yourself as you try to be to everyone else.

Exactly what you want (him) to be!

I love that damned song so much!!
Yeah, it’s great! Such a fun rollicking tune.
Uhh yeah, a jaunty little negotiation with the grim reaper!
Well said, Diane.

New album title: "Slightly Pronounced Limp Stage." Thank you for checking in.

Hip cancer is not really a thing. Relax.

You may want to see a chiropractor. It may not solve the problem completely, but it could lesson the discomfort. Good luck 👍

Not necessarily pertaining to this check in, but did your guitar ever find its way back to you? I sure hope so!
