This song popped into my jet-lagged brain for some reason, and since I had a guitar handy, I thought I’d see how close I could get to remembering it without listening to the record. Aside from the key and a few guitar fumbles, I’d say I got pretty close. Which makes sense because I can’t think of another record I listened to more growing up than Meat Puppets II.
I try not to put too much stock in top ten lists for a lot of reasons: number one being there’s really no reason to rank your records. Any attempt to quantify your connections to art feels almost wrong to me. Like ranking friends and family. I mean, I know who my number ones are, but there’s no need to rub it in anyone's face that they aren’t at the top* (they know who they aren’t). But I also don’t like making lists of favorite records for people because I get asked to do it all the time for “rock mags,” and I can assure you I’ve left this record off of some of them inadvertently. And I'll admit that any list of my favorite records, be it top ten, five, or even two is a pack of lies if Meat Puppets II isn’t on it. Just a one-of-a-kind gift of inspiration and imagination that’s magic hasn’t ever come close to wearing off. I love it. And it’s loved me back.
The day after I recorded this song and was thinking about posting it, our tour bus passed by some lovely Spanish plateaus, and I snapped a picture so you all would believe me. Life lined up is my favorite kind of life. I don’t need to know why or how it gets in sync from time to time. I just try to pay attention when it does and be thankful I caught a glimpse of the world making sense. Keeps me going til the next time. OxO
*Happy Birthday, Susie!!! You know you’re number one!
