Today is Mavis Staples’s birthday. It should be a national holiday. I believe everyone can agree on that. Thinking about Mavis today, I thought I’d share a version of a song that Nick Lowe wrote for her to include on the second album we made together, One True Vine. I’m also going to include a link to us rehearsing “The Weight” a few years ago so you can see how much fun it is to be in a room with Mavis. (As an added bonus Nick Lowe is there, too, being super cool. One might even say the Jesus of Cool.)
