Listen now | "Story to Tell (demo)"
I love the sound of the song... and the wordplay of the lyrics is really great... I'm teaching "songwriting" as my elective to some middle schoolers and I'm using "HTWOS" as the "text book." I'll probably share this with my class.
Jeff— I humbly sit at home making my own tiny recordings. How do you get this backwards guitar sound ? And are you recording in Logic?
Love the guitar. Love the lyrics. The humor in the first verse.
The truth in this line: 'The heart is smaller when you think'
(Changing one word from what we expect to hear surprises, makes a whole new meaning)
And the irony of this: "I wish I could have treated you well/Wish I had more of a story to tell"
(Ah ha, so, selfishness doesn't always give you a story to tell; in this instance it left you with less)
Very well done!
I like the "hero's journey" aspect of this one, and the nod and wink humor
(i.e. sewing your arm back on all wrong but oddly reaping the benefit). Great
first/last line. And yeah, the droning, backwards guitar is an effective
accompaniment to the theme of the song. The hero (you/us) goes into
the underworld and comes out changed, with a story to tell. Lord knows
we've all been living in the underworld this last couple of years. Keeps it
simple the way you "get in, get out" on this one. Hope this one goes on
the record.
Man, I just have to say (in a fawning fan moment) that I've been listening
to your music since I was a wee 16 year-old (now 49) with a scratched up
Still Feel Gone CD, a heap of teenage angst and disappointment with the
world, and the time to think and talk a lot about it on long backcountry drives
with my friends. Your work remains consequential on all sorts of levels. Many
thanks.
Thank you for sharing this. Beautiful lyrics and I love the juxtaposition of the fuzzy electric countering the pretty acoustic guitar!
Love the gravely sound of the guitar. Sounds distant and airy. Really like the chorus. Great tune!
This is a keeper.
Wow! Top shelf
Excellent song! The phrasing in the very beginning of the song reminded me of Blasting Fonda. Thank you for sharing!
I was thinking of the quiet version played on the Tweedy show!
Very well done
New stuff
Always a pleasure
hell yeah jeffy!
Yasssss . . . love it!
Another classic! Love it!
I really like the raw, stripped down feel of the song. Thanks for sharing!
I love the Country Disappeared vibe ☺️
