Thanks, everyone, for the thoughtful and excellent cover requests. A handful of you suggested something by Pavement, so I have a cover of “Range Life” today.
FYI, it’s pretty hard not to sing like Stephen Malkmus when you’re singing “Range Life.” He’s one of my favorite singers, and they’re one of my favorite bands, so his voice is pretty deeply ingrained in me. Hopefully I don’t sound like I’m trying to imitate him. Then again… there are worse things that could happen to you.
Below “Range Life,” there are also three versions of a song that will be part of something that’s going to be announced soon. I thought it might be interesting to share the evolution of the song through a few approaches that I took before I landed, basically, back in my own backyard.
One version has a bunch of extra words, which I inevitably whittled down, because I felt like the point of the song was clearer when the song was smaller. I find that to be the case a lot of the time. I try not to say more than I need to, and I’m not always successful.
